ABOUT THE DIRECTOR
Keith Johnson has served as Director of Bands at El Cerrito High School since 2009. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in music and a Master of Arts degree in music education with an emphasis in wind band conducting from San José State University. Prior to arriving at El Cerrito High School, Keith held positions as Director of the Jazzschool Young Musicians Program in Berkeley where he founded and directed the award-winning Jazzschool Studio Band, and as Director of Jazz Bands at Portola Middle School in El Cerrito. Groups under his direction have received several awards and performed in venues throughout North America and Europe including Carnegie Hall, Chicago’s Symphony Hall, and several jazz festivals including the North Sea, Umbria, Montruex, and Monterey jazz festivals. Keith maintains an active schedule as an adjudicator, clinician, and has served on the on the boards of the California Music Educators Association (CMEA) and the California Alliance for Jazz (CAJ). Keith has been the recipient of the CMEA Bay Section Outstanding Music Educator Award (2014), West County Ed Fund’s Teaching Excellence Award (2014), KRON 4 Teacher of the Week (2016), CMEA Bay Section Outstanding Jazz Educator Award (2018), and was recognized as the West Contra Costa Unified School District Teacher of the Year in 2014.
