ABOUT THE DIRECTOR
Keith Johnson is in his eighth year as Director of Bands at El Cerrito High School. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education from San José State University. He served as Director of Jazz Bands at Portola Middle School in El Cerrito (now Fred T. Korematsu Middle School) from 2003-2006 and Director of the Jazzschool Young Musicians Program in Berkeley (now the California Jazz Conservatory) from 2006-2013. Groups under his direction have received multiple awards and performed in venues throughout North America and Europe including Carnegie Hall, the North Sea, Montruex, Umbria, Vienne, and Monterey Jazz Festivals. In 2006, he founded the award-winning Jazzschool Studio Band and served as director of the group until 2013. During his tenure the Jazzschool Studio Band was the recipient of four Downbeat Magazine Student Music Awards and winners of the Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festival three consecutive years. Keith currently serves as Jazz Representative on the CMEA Bay Section Board and maintains an active schedule as an adjudicator and guest clinician at music festivals and summer music camps. In 2014, Keith was awarded the CMEA Bay Section Gilbert T. Freitas Outstanding Music Educator Award and recognized as the West Contra Costa Unified School District’s Teacher of the Year.
