ABOUT THE DIRECTOR
Keith Johnson has served as Director of Bands at El Cerrito High School since 2009. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in music and a Master of Arts degree in music education with an emphasis in instrumental conducting from San José State University, where he studied under Dr. Edward C. Harris. Groups under his direction have performed in venues throughout North America and Europe including Carnegie Hall, Chicago Symphony Center, and multiple jazz festivals that include the North Sea, Montruex, Umbria, Vienne, and Monterey Jazz Festivals. Prior to arriving at El Cerrito High School, Keith held positions as director of Jazz Bands at Portola Middle School in El Cerrito, CA and director of the Jazzschool Young Musicians Program in Berkeley, CA. In 2006, he founded the award-winning Jazzschool Studio Band and served as director of the group until 2013. Keith maintains an active schedule as an adjudicator, guest clinician, and has served on the on the boards of the California Music Educators Association (CMEA) and the California Alliance for Jazz (CAJ). In 2014, Keith was awarded the CMEA Bay Section Gilbert T. Freitas Outstanding Music Educator Award, the West County Ed Fund’s Teaching Excellence Award, and recognized as the West Contra Costa Unified School District Teacher of the Year.
